Welcome Back to School!
Dear Southwestern Families and Students,
We hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer and are relaxed, recharged, and ready to start a new school year. We are so excited to have everyone back at school very soon. We welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and look forward to working with you and your children.
Our staff has been planning and preparing for the upcoming school year. Our office staff has been busy registering new families, ordering materials, and updating student files. Our custodians have spent the entire summer thoroughly cleaning the facility. Our PTO is gearing up to welcome families, provide volunteer opportunities, and offer other exciting events and programs. We are privileged to live in a caring community with the common goals of nurturing responsible, caring students and promoting high-level learning.
Each year brings some changes. This includes a few additions to our staff. We are excited to welcome several new faces. Haley Westerdahl, Taylor Storer, and Ashley Stafford will be joining us as special education teachers. We have a familiar face in our school nurse as Dave Anderson will be joining us full time. We are also welcoming Cody Whitton as our new librarian, Jessica Young as our new school psychologist, and Janice Johnson as our new music teacher.
If you drove past the campus this summer, you may have noticed numerous maintenance and construction projects. The new high school gymnasium continued construction this summer with an anticipated opening date of November 1st. The roof on the elementary school is in the process of being replaced. This summer we met with architects from Clark, Patterson, Lee to discuss our upcoming playground, cafetorium, and parking lot projects that will begin next summer. We look forward to inviting student and community input in the upcoming playground project.
This school year we are excited to announce that each student in grades 1-5 will have their own laptop computer to use while at school. Students will learn keyboarding skills using a program called Keyboarding without Tears and will engage in other project-based assignments using their laptops.
We will have two Open House events. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten will be held on Thursday August 30th and grades 1-5 will take place on Thursday September 13th.
Please be at your bus stop 10 minutes early for the first few days. After the first week, the bus route will settle into a routine and a regular time will be established. If you need to change your child’s regular transportation, please send a note with your child in the morning or call as soon as possible. Transportation modifications requested after 2:00pm cannot be accommodated. If you choose to transport your child, please review the drop-off and pick-up procedures.
Elementary School Times to Remember:
8:40 Doors open (please DO NOT drop students off prior to 8:30. We do not have adult supervision)
8:55 Tardy bell (students should be in their classroom and ready when this bell rings)
3:05 Dismissal for students being picked up by a parent
3:15 Dismissal for students riding the bus
Please be on the lookout for our monthly parent videos. We will be posting one video per month on the school website and PTO Facebook page beginning in September. The videos will contain upcoming school events and behavior and academic information to help your children at home.
Thank you to all who are helping prepare for the new school year. We eagerly look forward to greeting students and families again. It remains an honor and privilege to serve as your principals. Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all children.
