Southwestern Sophomores Spark Change Through Positivity Project

At Southwestern High School, positivity isn’t just a mindset; it’s a mission! And this year, Christine Beichner-Miller’s 10th-grade English class proved that when students are given the freedom to lead, they will rise to the occasion in amazing ways.

Through a semester-long initiative known as the Positivity Project, students were challenged to create meaningful, community-centered projects that inspire change, amplify kindness, and foster a deeper connection between school and society. The result? Some of the most impactful and creative campaigns to date, and all entirely student-led.

While every group left its mark, one project stood out for its compassion and collaboration, created by sophomores Dorian Weaver and Cassidy Jones, who partnered with the Chautauqua County Humane Society to support animals in need. The pair organized a donation drive, rallying classmates and community members to collect supplies for the shelter.

In a moving gesture of solidarity, the B.E. Strong Foundation joined the effort by providing a gift on behalf of the second-semester senior class, taught by Junie Eimiller. This effectively turned a student project into a full-fledged community movement.

“This was a perfect example of what can happen when students are trusted to lead,” said Beichner-Miller. “Dorian and Cassidy identified a real need, built a solution, and inspired others to join them. It was incredible to watch them grow into leaders right in front of us.”

Now in its fifth year, the Positivity Project has become a signature experience in Beichner-Miller’s classroom, one that not only enhances students’ writing and critical thinking skills but also empowers them to be active, empathetic citizens. Projects have ranged from mental health awareness and environmental advocacy to community clean-ups and intergenerational connections with local senior centers.

“We don’t just read and write about the world,” Beichner-Miller said. “We try to make it better.”

The project’s growing legacy is a testament to the power of student voice, and this year, Dorian and Cassidy’s commitment to giving back proved just how impactful that voice can be.

Their story, like so many others born from this classroom, reminds us: when we let young people lead with purpose, they’ll lead with heart.
