Southwestern Seniors Honored at Hewes Center Awards Night
Several Southwestern seniors were recognized for their achievements in academics, leadership, and perseverance as the Hewes Educational Center held its annual Senior Awards Night on June 3 at Panama Central School.
The evening brought together Career & Technical Education students to celebrate accomplishments in the classroom, workplace, and community. In addition to numerous scholarships and awards, the ceremony also highlighted student success through the induction of new members into the National Technical Honor Society.
Among Southwestern's honorees, Ethan Coone, a senior in the Construction Technology program, received two major awards. He was presented with the Dru Cole Memorial Fund Award, which recognizes students who have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity. Coone also earned the Principal’s Award, with Hewes Principal Paul Mihalko praising his determination, perseverance, and willingness to support others.
Liam Rankin Jr., a Small Animal Science student, received the Rebecca Ann Capitano Award, which honors Capitano’s passion for animal science and is presented to a student who demonstrates a similar commitment to the field.
Mackenzie Andrews, a Criminal Justice student, was recognized twice during the ceremony. She received a Ryan Howard Memorial Scholarship, which honors students for their attitude, attendance, dedication, and work ethic. Andrews also earned the Tri-County BOCES Education Association Leadership Award for her positive attitude, concern for others, and leadership involvement.
Additional recipients of the Ryan Howard Memorial Scholarship from Southwestern included Arianna Silakowski, a Culinary Arts student, and Connor Swafford, an Automotive Technology student. The scholarship recognizes students who exemplify strong workplace habits and dedication.
Kylee Miller, a Health Careers student, received the United Support Association Continuing Education Award, which supports students pursuing postsecondary education.
The ceremony also featured the induction of 10 students into the National Technical Honor Society. New members included Southwestern students Mackenzie Andrews (Criminal Justice) and Aiden Guzman (Information Technology/Computer Systems), alongside students from Sherman, Frewsburg, Falconer, Jamestown, Bemus Point, and Chautauqua Lake.
