SWHS Shines at Shea’s Wonder Awards

Southwestern High School’s production of “Matilda: The Musical” earned high praise and multiple honors at this year’s prestigious Shea’s Wonder Awards, held Saturday evening at Shea’s Theatre in Buffalo.

SWHS senior Adriana Bango was named to the elite All-Star Cast, an honor given to just one student from each of the 20 semi-finalist productions, handpicked by their musical directors.

In a showstopping collaborative number, several students from both Southwestern High and Middle Schools graced the Shea’s stage, joining peers from across the region. Representing Southwestern were: Cameron Case, Gracie Watkins, Sydney Dawson, Bella Sirianni, Mikaela Luce, Bre Horton, Eden Heintzman, Josie Buttafarro, Claire Salisbury, Gelia Saullo, Payton Swartz, Adriana Bango, Macie Bruce, and Hannah Powell.

The production also took home the Wonder Award for Outstanding Scenic Design & Execution, with senior Alana Weaver accepting the award on behalf of the team.

Perhaps the most heartfelt recognition of the night went to Christine Beichner-Miller, who was honored with the Michael Shea Educator of the Year Award for her exceptional dedication to the performing arts and her outstanding leadership in directing Southwestern’s musicals year after year.

Congratulations to the talented cast, crew, and creative team—Christine Beichner-Miller, Sue Huther, Jenny Brown, Dana Lovecchio, Jamie Sigler, and Cody Hiller—for a spectacular production and a well-deserved night of recognition!
