Celebrating Young Writers, Community Partnership, and Academic Achievement

Six Southwestern Middle School students were recognized this week for their outstanding submissions to the annual Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, a nationwide program sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) that encourages young writers to reflect on themes of patriotism, citizenship, and American values.

This year’s theme, “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”, inspired thoughtful and heartfelt essays from students across the district. After careful review by the VFW judges, six Southwestern Middle School students earned top honors for their creativity, insight, and strong writing skills.

First place was awarded to Devion Mosher, whose essay impressed judges with its powerful message and clear understanding of everyday patriotism.
Second place went to Emma Landy, recognized for her thoughtful reflections on service and community.
Third place was awarded to Breona Miller for her heartfelt perspective on supporting others and showing pride in her country.

Fourth place went to Camden Johnson, followed by Mya Couchenour in fifth, and Kasper Schmincke in sixth. Each student demonstrated exceptional writing abilities and a meaningful connection to the contest’s theme.

During the ceremony, Southwestern’s previous Patriot’s Pen winner returned to share a brief message of encouragement with this year’s sixth‑grade participants. In her speech, she reminded students to “Keep writing. Keep thinking. Keep trying.” She emphasized that they are the future leaders, creators, and problem‑solvers of this country, and that their thoughtful essays prove they are already capable of big ideas and bright possibilities. Her words served as an inspiring reminder that the Patriot’s Pen Contest is not only about honoring great writing, but also about recognizing the character and potential each student carries.

“I am incredibly proud of these students,” said English teacher Lucia Guarnieri, who guided the sixth graders through the writing and revision process. “They worked hard, thought deeply, and expressed themselves with honesty and maturity. Their essays show that young people truly understand the importance of community, responsibility, and patriotism.”

A huge thank‑you goes to the John W. Tiffany Post 53 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for giving our students the opportunity to participate in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. Their ongoing support helps young writers find their voice while fostering civic pride throughout the community.

The recognized students will be honored by the local VFW chapter, and Devion Mosher’s first‑place essay will advance to the next level of competition.

Southwestern Middle School congratulates all six winners for their dedication and exceptional writing.
