    Dear Southwestern Families and Students,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! As we start the new school year together on Wednesday September 8th, our staff looks forward to working with you and your child! This past year has shown us what we can accomplish with a strong partnership between our families and schools. While we are committed to educating your child, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Each school year, our goal is to provide the best education possible while keeping everyone safe. In the next weeks we will be focusing on updated safety measures and protocols to help keep our students and staff as safe as possible while in school.

    New Staff
We have several new faces in our building this year. Joining our staff this year is Maddison Whippo as a special education teacher, Alicia Brandi as our new AIS math teacher, Allissa Bowman as a special education teacher, and Dylan Lundmark as a 2nd grade teacher. We welcome Laury Marshall and Candace Lang as teacher aides and Katie Young will be serving as our Parents as Teachers Coordinator. We are excited to welcome all of them to Southwestern Elementary and our community.

    Health and Safety Protocols

This school year we will be offering virtual learning on a very limited basis.  If your child requires a virtual option due to a medical issue, please contact the elementary school main office. Students will continue to eat lunch in the cafeteria while being seated at a safe distance. We have adjusted lunch times and ordered additional cafeteria tables to keep students spread apart. Students will be seated 3 feet apart in classrooms and the cafeteria.  We will continue to enforce regular handwashing and disinfecting protocols throughout the school day and after school each evening.

We will be starting the school year with students wearing masks. All students and staff will be required to wear masks when indoors and on busses. Masks will not be required when outdoors. Mask breaks will be provided throughout the day when students can be safely distanced from one another. We will re-evaluate our masking policies every 4 weeks based on community transmission.

Because of our high community transmission, we will continue to restrict outside visitors in the building. If you will be picking up your child early, please send a note to school with your child. We will be cancelling our Kindergarten open house scheduled for September 2nd and open house for grades 1-5 scheduled for September 16th.

All special area classes will return to special area classrooms. This school year each student will receive Health Education in addition to Physical Education. Mr. Arnold will be teaching Health Education where he will focus on healthy diets, exercise, anatomy, substance abuse prevention, and behavior and emotion management.

    Transportation

Anyone that will be riding a school bus at any point during the school year, must register for transportation. This can be done on the district website. Please be at your bus stop 10 minutes early for the first few days. After the first week, the bus route will settle into a routine and a regular time will be established. If you need to change your child’s regular transportation, please send a note with your child in the morning or call as soon as possible. Transportation modifications requested after 2:00pm cannot be accommodated. If you choose to transport your child, please review the drop-off and pick-up procedures.
