Welcome Back to School!
Dear Southwestern Families and Students,
We hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and some time to relax this summer. We are looking forward to another productive school year. A strong partnership between school and families will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success. As demands and complexities of teaching children increase, it becomes more evident that we all need to work together to ensure that our children reach their potential.
As summer school comes to a close our staff is busy preparing to welcome all of our students back to school in September. The technology department is working hard to make sure each student has the tools to become 21st century learners. Our office staff is registering our new families and making sure that teachers have all the supplies and materials they need to instruct at the highest level. Our maintenance staff is moving and cleaning classrooms as quickly as they can. Although no students are on campus, our staff never stops working to make sure that students are provided with the best learning environment possible.
The new elementary playground is well underway. Assembly of the new playground pieces will start soon and we are looking forward to the new playground being open this school year. Work has also begun on our cafetorium addition. Our contractors have started digging and plan to begin adding on to the current cafetorium over the winter break.
We have several new faces in our building this year. Joining our staff this year is Cayla Slade as a special education teacher, Alyssa Jones as our new AIS math teacher, and Carolyn Becker as a 4th grade teacher. We are excited to welcome all of them to Southwestern Elementary and our community this school year.
We are excited to be using three new curriculums this school year. Our teachers will be using a new math curriculum in grades kindergarten through 5 called Math Expressions. The new curriculum will be a more rigorous and engaging curriculum for our students. We also will be using new science kits called Mystery Science that increase student inquiry into science activities. Lastly we will be using a social emotional learning curriculum called 2nd Step in grades Pre-K through 5. This program will focus on helping students solve problems, manage their emotions, strengthen their social skills, and build empathy towards others.
As in years past we will have two Open House events. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten open house will be held on Wednesday August 28th from 6:00-7:00 and grades 1-5 open house will take place on Thursday September 12th from 6:00-7:30.
Please be at your bus stop 10 minutes early for the first few days. After the first week, the bus route will settle into a routine and a regular time will be established. If you need to change your child’s regular transportation, please send a note with your child in the morning or call as soon as possible. Transportation modifications requested after 2:00pm cannot be accommodated. If you choose to transport your child, please review the drop-off and pick-up procedures.
Elementary School Times to Remember:
8:40 Doors open (please DO NOT drop students off prior to 8:30. We do not have adult supervision)
8:55 Tardy bell (students should be in their classroom and ready when this bell rings)
3:05 Dismissal for students being picked up by a parent
3:15 Dismissal for students riding the bus
We, along with our dedicated staff, feel privileged to be a part of this school family and community. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing everyone soon.
