It is hard to believe that we will end the school year with what seems very little closure with our kids. I truly thought in March that we would be back to school by the end of April. Never did we imagine that we would end the school year under these conditions. What is heartwarming and amazing is the incredible work from our staff and families. You shifted gears quickly and did everything possible to make this work best for the kids. There is no doubt that we will emerge stronger than ever.
Re-Opening – NYSED (New York State Education Department) has been charged with making recommendations for the opening of schools in Phase 4. The state formulated a task force that begins meeting with regional members across the state Monday, June 15, 2020. There are various sub-committees that make up the taskforce. I have been asked to sit on this regional task force. There is a second level regional task force for our BOCES that have various representatives from the school districts. Molly Moore and John Spacht will serve on this particular task force. There is a SW district wide task force that will have their initial meeting this week. Molly Moore and Matt Kindberg will be chairpersons for our SW task force. It is still too early to speculate on what school will look like in September. Following the state data will be criticial checkpoints that will drive the direction of re-opening of schools. With so many unknowns and mis-information out there do not hesitiate to ask or send an email if you have a question.
Graduation – We are still hopeful for a live graduation for our seniors. We are watching the state directives closely and hope that they will allow additional numbers in the next few weeks.
Budget – The district was required this year to conduct our budget vote by absentee ballots. Over 7400 ballots were mailed out to registered voters. Last year just under 400 people voted. As of tday we have received 1456 ballots. Every ballot returned has to be verified and logged on a spreadsheet. Thank you to Pam SaGurney as our district clerk for managing all of the voting changes. Pam and I will head up to Mayville on Tuedsday night, June 16th, with the sealed ballots. The ballots will be opened by the Board of Elections and then scanned. Pam will watch as ballots are counted. If the budget does not pass there will be a re-vote in July that will hopefully be live. Stay Tuned!
Facilities and Athletics – We will open up our athletic facilities as soon as we are cleared and enter Phase 4. There is a state-wide task force that is meeting regarding athletics. In addition, there will be a Section VI task force that I will be a part of that will be putting out guidelines related to athletics. Athletics will be following NHS guidelines as well as CDC guidelines. On Sunday the governor announced a return to some low risk youth sports but this does not include the use of our facilities. We will review the executive order and continue to monitor all future guidance.
Building Office Hours – Starting the week of June 29th the building offices will be closed on Fridays, but all staff will be available by email as they work from home. We will be deep cleaning the office areas on Fridays.
As we approach the re-opening, my greatest hope is that we return to school with a normal schedule but that may not be feasible. Returning to school with some type of a hybrid schedule that follows all rules for safety, keeps families together, and enbale us to provide for our students will be a focus for our task force. We will monitor and follow all required guidance. We will learn from our past experiences to inform and improve as we move forward.
This has been the hardest work that I have engaged in over 36 years in education. Parents, guardians, teachers, and staff have made an amazing team to work with through all of this craziness. I hope that you will all take some time to relax and rejuvenate this summer. Every one of you have a made a difference for our kids, school, and community. We will stay in touch with updates over the summer but do not hesitiate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
All my best to our incredible Trojan Tough family!

As always, we appreciate your continued support and dedication in making sure our students are actively participating in their online instruction. This has been a heavy lift for our families and we recognize your continued hard work and perseverance.
I encourage all of you to take a look at our grading information on the website. We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher, school counselor, or building principal with any questions or concerns.

We continue to follow all executive orders for New York State. With that said, we are monitoring daily as we plan for upcoming activities, particularly graduation. As soon as we are able we will make an announcement to our families and graduates.
The district has started to work out our reopening plan. We will be followng all guidance from NYSED, DOH, and any existing executive orders. Planning is just beginning and we will be reaching out for input from our families and community in the future.

First and foremost THANK YOU to each of you for your continued support of your child’s remote learning during a very challenging time for all. It is our hope together your child will continue to learn and grow during this time.
On Friday, Governor Cuomo issued a new executive order declaring all schools in New York State Closed for the remainder of the school year. While this is disappointing for all of us here at SW we understand the need to be safe during this pandemic. We will continue with the current plan for remote learning through the remainder of this school year.
Here are some key points:
- The SW District continues to provide a meal delivery service (no cost) to any family residing in our district.
- The Continuity of Learning Plan can be located on our district Website.
- The School Budget Vote will take place on June9, 2020 by absentee ballots. Stay tuned for details.
- Our hope is to have current email addresses identified within the week. We will push weekly update out to your email as well as post updates on our district website.
- Parent Zoom Meetings can be scheduled by calling 716-484-1137.
- The last day of school has not been determined. The district is waiting on further guidance from the state. As soon as available we will notify parents.
Thank you for your involvement and support of the SW District. Please reach out anytime with questions to 716-484-1137 and/or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Stay safe and Trojan Strong………….Mrs. Donahue
