Dear Southwestern Community,

Spring is just around the corner. I don’t know about you, but I feel we deserve a warm, sunny Spring! It’s always refreshing to see students outside playing on the playground, participating in physical education on our fields, and seeing our spring sports teams practicing outside! Last year, close to 50% of grade 7-12 students were involved in a Spring Sport, and we expect that level of participation this year as well.

We continue to provide many engaging activities for our students. While I’m writing this, our high school musical, Once Upon A Mattress is in production. I hope you all had the chance to see this amazing show that showcases the creativity of our staff and the unbelievable talent of our students. In addition to the actors on stage, our students are in the Pit and Technical Crew. Students in middle and high school are afforded the chance to be involved in the musical. Well done, Trojans!

This month also features 13 seniors who have completed the requirements to graduate with an Individual Arts Assessment Pathway (IAAP) credential. Southwestern joined the first cohort in the state to provide this graduation pathway as an option for our students. Please visit the Lakewood Library this month to see their art portfolios and reflections on their artistic progress.

In the elementary school, we look forward to STEAM night on March 18th from 6-7:30 pm. Participation from our staff and community is always outstanding; thank you to our teachers that have worked for months to plan and organize this incredible event for our students and families!

Thank you to our middle school PTO for hosting a “Blacklight” Dance earlier this month. Close to 200 students enjoyed an evening of fun. Kudos to our middle school math department that presented an incredible presentation to the board about their work in providing interventions for our students. We look forward to seeing the fruit of their effort on state assessments in April.

Please keep an eye out for information about our annual School Board election and budget vote taking place on May 19, 2026. We have worked diligently to provide a fiscally responsible budget that preserves and creates necessary programming for our students. We encourage participation in our budget hearing coming up on May 12th. As always, if you have questions or input, please reach out – mmoore@swcsk12.org
