Thomas Named LEGO Master Educator
Southwestern Central School District teacher Dan Thomas represented LEGO Education at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference in Philadelphia in late June.
A longtime educator with the Southwestern Central School District was been selected by LEGO Education for the 2019 cohort of its U.S. LEGO Education Master Educator Program, which connects like-minded educators to share knowledge and ideas for student success through hands-on learning in classrooms.
Dan Thomas, also a 1988 graduate of Southwestern, has taught in the district for 26 years. He currently teaches Career and Technology Education and technology – including robotics and coding – to students in sixth through 12th grades.
“Students have been taught to regurgitate information instead of how to work through problems, try new things and, most importantly, fail a few times,” says Thomas, who attended the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Conference in Philadelphia this summer (June 21-23, 2019). He attended as part of LEGO Education and Code.org and represented LEGO at its booth on the exhibit floor.
The Master Educator Program, a volunteer ambassador program, is a community of early learning through secondary educators who embody the mission of LEGO Education to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow by enabling every student to succeed. Master Educators have opportunities to share best practices, provide feedback to advance hands-on learning, participate in LEGO Education activities, and more.
“As a LEGO Education Master Educator, I’m excited to bring the joy and excitement of playing with LEGO to the classroom,” says Thomas. “It truly is applicable to any class, grade level or curriculum.”
The U.S. program includes more than 200 members, including Thomas, who embody the LEGO Education mission of enabling success for all students through hands-on learning experiences. Participants in the program represent a variety of grade levels and school districts from 39 states.
Thomas resides in Jamestown with his wife, Ericka, and their children, Sydney and Cooper.
