  • No Dogs on Campus as of May 1st

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people began walking their dogs on the Southwestern campus. Even though dogs are not normally allowed on campus, we have let it slide as our campus has been a great, safe place for people to get outside and exercise during this time of ongoing social and activity restrictions. As the weather changes and we begin opening up our campus more and more for Physical Education classes to take place outdoors and  for sports to start taking place, we have unfortunately noticed that people are not cleaning up after their pets. This makes for hazardous and unsanitary conditions for our athletes and students in classes taking place outdoors. As of May 1st, our No Dogs on Campus rule will be back in effect and will be enforced to protect our athletes and our students during outdoor classes or playtime. We thank you for your cooperation.

  • Athletic Information for Spring Spectators

The NYSPHSAA and Section VI will allow member school districts the option of allowing spectators to attend home and away indoor and outdoor athletic events for the spring 2021 season. Schools have the autonomy to adjust down if they deem that the footprint of their facilities are insufficient to safely host two spectators for each athlete.

“With the increase in the state’s outdoor gathering limits effective May 10th, and indoor gathering limit on May 19th, the guidance pertaining to sports and recreation is tied to those limits (500 individuals outdoors, 250 indoors). The sports and recreation spectator limit, which applies to school sports as well, is now the greater of 2 spectators per participant OR 500 individuals outdoors/250 indoors.”

Southwestern is excited to allow spectators to attend indoor and outdoor contests during the spring season to cheer in a positive manner for our student/athletes. The district will require all the procedures outlined to be followed at all home contests. Any violations may result in spectators losing the opportunity to attend the spring contests. The following procedures will be in place for the spring season:

    1. Six feet of social distancing is required during contests
    2. Masks will be required to be properly worn during the entire contest
    3. Specific sections of the bleachers will be designated for each spectator group in the gym for wrestling

Spectators will not be admitted into the facility until 15 minutes prior to each contest for wrestling and 30 minutes prior for all other spring outdoor contests. Also, all spectators must leave the facility immediately after the contest. Congregating in common areas is prohibited. Finally, CCAA schools plan to continue live streaming wrestling matches during the spring season. Live stream links will be made available on the Southwestern District Athletic webpage.

Again, we are excited to welcome spectators into our facility for the spring season and look forward to everyone cheering in a positive manner for our student/athletes. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Salisbury at (716) 484-6840.
